Coach Mike Thompson

Coach Mike Thompson brings motivational enthusiasm and an expertise in free weight training, Olympic and power lifting to our growing facility. He has a keen eye for technique and is an excellent communicator with the athletes, parents, coaches and health club members alike.

His dedication shows not only in his interaction with our athletes but in his constant search for more efficient training methods. Coach has also designed and built some of our specialized equipment to better suit our athletes.

Coach Thompson played basketball at Penn State (Dubois) and was the starting catcher for the 1977 PSAC Champion Baseball team. Following college, Coach Thompson spent thirteen years in the U.S. Coast Guard, eight as their „Health & Wellness¾ coordinator. He received extensive training and was responsible for evaluating personnel, developing individualized workouts and diet regimes for over hundreds of guardsmen in six separate commands.

He has a wide and varied competitive background with a unique combination of strength, skill and aerobic expertise. Coach competed in the Scottish Highland Games throughout the Eastern U.S. and Scotland winning many overall titles and receiving numerous invitations to the U.S. Championships where he finished 3rd, three times. In 1993, Coach Thompson was invited to the Cowal games in Dunoon to compete in the Scottish National Championships where he finished 6th after an extensive training program with nationally recognized Track & Field throwing coach Bill Sutherland of Southern CT State University.

He has competed in numerous triathlons. Once, with only five weeks of training he competed in a Half- Ironman Triathlon (1.2 mile swim, 50 mile bike & 12 mile run) in Honolulu, Hawaii and finished in the top 100.

Some area athletes and parents may know Coach Thompson as one of the Ansonia American Legion Baseball Coaches and former Director & Coach of Ansonia’s Babe Ruth Baseball program. Most recently, we congratulate Coach Thompson on his appointment as the JV baseball Coach at Teikyo Post University.

Coach Thompson lives with his wife Laura, son Michael, daughter Sara and Gordon setter “Angus” in Ansonia.
